Why percentages confuse people
A 40% discount + extra 20% off is NOT 60% off. Discounts stack multiplicatively: final price = price × 0.60 × 0.80 = 48% of original (52% off). This calculator keeps the maths honest.

The four formulas
- X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y
- X is what % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100
- % change = ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100 — positive = increase, negative = decrease
- Discount = price × (1 − discount% ÷ 100)
Salary-hike nuance: a 20% hike followed by a 20% cut doesn't return you to the start — you're 4% below where you began.
