80C: ₹1.5L per year limit
Your NSC deposit qualifies for deduction under Section 80C — but only up to the combined ₹1.5 lakh/year 80C ceiling (shared with EPF, PPF, ELSS, life insurance, etc.). Amounts above the limit get no fresh deduction.
Year-wise growth
NSC compounds annually — each year's interest is added to the certificate and itself earns interest. The reinvested interest for years 1–4 also counts as a fresh 80C investment each year (year-5 interest doesn't, since it matures).

Tax on interest: NSC interest is taxable under "Income from Other Sources" each year on an accrual basis. However, because years 1–4 interest is deemed reinvested in NSC, it also qualifies for 80C deduction in that year (subject to the ₹1.5L cap). The final year's interest is fully taxable with no fresh deduction.
Premature closure: NSC cannot be closed before 5 years except in three exceptional cases — (1) death of the holder, (2) court order, or (3) forfeiture by a Gazetted Government Officer when pledged as security.
