What is net worth — and why it matters
Your net worth is simply everything you own (assets) minus everything you owe (liabilities). It's the single most honest measure of financial health — far more telling than salary alone. Two people earning ₹2 lakh a month can have wildly different net worths depending on savings, debt and assets.
- Assets include cash, bank balances, investments, property, gold, retirement corpus (EPF/PPF/NPS) and vehicles.
- Liabilities include every outstanding loan balance and credit card due — not EMIs, but the remaining principal.
- Net worth = Assets − Liabilities. Track it yearly; the trend matters more than any single number.
- Debt-to-asset ratio under 40% is comfortable; above 60% is a warning sign to deleverage.
Rule of thumb: a healthy household aims for net worth equal to 1–2× annual income by their late 30s, growing to 6–8× by the mid-40s on the way to financial independence.
