Formula agreement within ±3 kg
The four classic equations were derived from different populations. If they disagree wildly for you, the WHO healthy BMI range above (18.5–24.9) is a safer daily target than any single "ideal" number.

The four formulas
- Devine (1974): Men 50 + 2.3 kg/inch over 5ft · Women 45.5 + 2.3 kg/inch
- Robinson (1983): refined for better mid-height accuracy
- Miller (1983): slightly higher baseline values
- Hamwi (1964): Men 48 + 2.7 kg/inch · Women 45 + 2.2 kg/inch
Frame size caveat: all four formulas assume medium frame. Broad-built people can add ~10%; small frames subtract ~10%. That's why the WHO healthy range is the more realistic target.
